Fall 2010 Newsletter: Update from Director of Housing

Fall 2010 Newsletter: Update from Director of Housing

Philip Posey
Director of Housing/Case Management

Christmas is fast approaching and just like a little child we are ready to unwrap our presents. The closer we get to that day, the slower time seems to move. We have acquired the first lot for our new home construction and should know about the other two by the middle of November. The city has informed us that they would like to finalize the contract during that time as well. Once the contract is finalized, we will begin building our first 3 homes for low-income families. It has been a long wait! The season is finally here and we're praying that Christmas comes a little early for Cornerstone's Housing Development Corporation.

Jerry Cabluck
Director of WelcomeBack/Tarrant County

Kingdom ministry is an area that Cornerstone strives for all to experience. We have seen a wonderful example of this kind of ministry in the lives of Laura, a parole officer, and her husband, Ronald. One of Laura's parolees was a mom with five children, including newborn twin boys. Knowing the struggle it would be to raise these children, she reached out for help. Laura and her husband have now adopted the twins, giving them a home filled with Christian love, acceptance, attention, and guidance. What a beautiful picture of God's kind of love!

WelcomeBack/Tarrant County had the privilege of hosting a baby shower for the new parents, another link in the ministry of the Kingdom. (WelcomeBack is currently on target to see a projected 2400 men and women during 2010. As we look forward to the winter holiday season, we are always in need of men's coats.)

New Creations: Reentry Mentoring Program
Nurturing Seeds of Hope Through Physical and Spiritual Support

Please join us in welcoming Kelly Purselley, New Creations Services Director, and Cheryl Campbell, New Creations Mentor Coordinator. New Creations is dedicated to serving women being released from Dawson State Jail to Tarrant County. Believing that life change comes through relationships, New Creations is committed to providing mentor relationships and support to these women.

New Creations participants will meet with their mentor in prison for 6 months and walk with the mentor at least 12 months after release. The women will take life skills classes and have a New Creations case manager who will assist with housing, educational planning, financial planning, mental health and substance abuse issues while offering ministry support to the participant's family.

If you feel God calling you to this vital ministry please contact the New Creations team. We also pray that you will partner in prayer with us for the women that will be served through New Creations Reentry Mentoring Program and their families.

What a Blessing it is to serve Him together with you. Our new website is up now and it is GREAT! Check it out at www.canetwork.org. Be sure and watch the new video that was shown at Cowboys Stadium where Cornerstone was honored with The Neighborhood Builders Award from Bank of America. It is only 5 minutes long but the blessing of knowing you are helping change lives will carry on for eternity for thousands like Keneth and Zack.

The Medical Clinic is being expanded thanks to a grant from Texas Health Resources, HCA, Baylor/All Saints and the Methodist Health Systems. The eye clinic is making progress as well as the dental clinic.

Our New Creations Program for mentoring women being released from Dawson State Jail and returning to Tarrant County came on line October 1st. Be sure and read about that in Kelly Purselley's article.

The Cornerstone Christian Women's Job Corp is having record numbers of participants and graduates. There were 61 people at the graduation on October 14th.

GED classes have been having 15 or more for months now, and ESL continues to grow each month.

Staff just returned from two days of planning for 2011. One thing we really need is for you to be a fried to those we serve by volunteering in one of our programs. We have training and you will really be Blessed by walking with those that are working hard to claim the hope and joy of Christ. Please get in touch with Kristen Horton about helping out. She can be reached at 817-632-6000 extension 122.

God is really at work here at Cornerstone and as Dr. Henry Blackaby says in Experiencing God, "find out where God is working and join Him." You and those you serve will be Blessed!

In Him,

Mike Doyle

We're praising God for His faithfulness!

There have been lots of great stories floating around Cornerstone lately, so we’ve compiled a few for you to read and be excited about with us!

“M was able to exit the program without owing anything and being able to pay all of her bills by herself and in full each month. She plans to remain in her current home for at least another six months after the program.”

“It is encouraging to watch one of our participant families who will be completing the program soon. As they look toward the future they are researching prices for houses. With courage and faith they are making an action plan to accomplish their goal of becoming home owners.”

“A single mother is finding success in college. She is learning how to prioritize her time. It is exciting to watch her thrive in her studies and become proud of the work she has accomplished.”

“V is a single mother who recently got promoted to a new position and is making nearly twice as much as she was making before. The HPRP program was a bridge for her and her family to stay housed so she can get her life back in order and be able to properly provide for her family.”
