We need your help to feed people in our area. If you and a group consisting of 3 or more volunteer at the Tarrant Food Bank for Cornerstone Assistance Network, we receive a credit to cover the handling charges of mass amounts of food. Home Ownership Opportunity

Home Ownership Opportunity

Great Wonderful Greetings to All Who Read This Testimony.

First of all, I would like to give thanks to God, my Heavenly Father, who blesses me and my children, Deon and Alexus on a daily basis.

I would also like to thank Cornerstone Assistance Network, especially Mr. Mike Doyle, Mr. Philip Posey, and Miss Taryn Freeze. May God continue to bless each of you abundantly.

Wow! I have had the storms of life rage around me. I have been through a divorce, a foreclosure, and my car has been repossessed. I have been evicted from my apartment, laid off from my job, and without a place of my own, requiring me to live with family and friends. What a humbling experience. Although it was difficult, I have learned to trust and have faith in God constantly, even during the storm!

Four years ago, I was evicted from my apartment and had nowhere to go. Because I did not want my daughter and myself to call a shelter, "home," I started to pray to God for wisdom. I remembered that God's Word says you have not because you ask not (I'm paraphrasing James 4:2-3). So, I started asking. I asked friends, acquaintances, and my home church, E.M.I.C. if they knew of a person or agency that could help me with housing. A pastor at E.M.I.C. gave me a list of agencies to call. I went down the list and received nothing but frustrating news until I called Cornerstone Assistance Network. I knew the person who answered the phone could hear me crying. The lady I was transferred to was very nice and asked me several questions before assuring me that Cornerstone would be able to help. Finally, good news! I just started thanking God and shouting praises to Him!

For two years, Cornerstone Assistance Network was truly a blessing from God in my family's life. Contingent on my full-time employment, Cornerstone provided rental assistance where I paid a percentage of my income each month for an 1100 square foot apartment. During this process, Cornerstone also helped me start a budget.

With new found hope, my daughter and I began to pray in agreement, believing God for a home. We also took steps to make that a reality. We constantly visited model homes, looked through home magazines and even put pictures of homes on our refrigerator to keep the vision before us. It was easy to get discouraged and I often wondered how I would get the money for a down-payment. Surely it would take years! Would there even be a financial institution that would lend to a single mom in the process of eliminating debt? From my human perspective it seemed impossible, so I clung to the promise that with God all things are possible.

In late June 2010, I found a flyer on my door promising mortgage payments about the same as my current rent. I made an appointment with a counselor to discuss purchasing a home. The meeting was overwhelming and I left discouraged, sure I wouldn't be living in one of those homes any time soon. When I got home, I had a little talk with God. I told Him I had decided to cast my cares and concerns about a home for my family at His feet. I thanked God for listening to me and I also thanked Him in advance for the beautiful home I knew He would one day provide for us. After that, I didn't worry about it and focused on living faithfully in the present.

I must testify that God has many ways to give us the desires of our hearts. Ephesians 3:20-21 says, "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask for or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen." I just kept believing!

On July 1, 2010 I got an e-mail from Taryn Freeze, Director of Supportive Services for Cornerstone. In the e-mail, she wrote that Cornerstone was looking for a client, current or past, with an interest in home ownership. I immediately expressed my interest and she gave me Mr. Philip Posey's contact information. He set up an appointment for us to view the home about two weeks later. We fell in love with the beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage home sitting on 1/3 of an acre. It was donated to Cornerstone Assistance Network, who is now my lender through Republic Title Company. I closed on the home August 24th with no out of pocket expense and my total monthly payment is under $700 a month. To God be the glory!! With God all things are possible!

Blessings,

CVS Caremark partnering with Direct Relief USA to issue vouchers to clinics and health centers across the country redeemable for free flu shots at CVS/pharmacy and MinuteClinic.

Fort Worth, Texas, September 20, 2010: Cornerstone Medical Clinic announced that beginning today, it will offer free flu shots to patients who lack health insurance, as part of a donation from CVS Caremark, the largest pharmacy health care provider in the United States. CVS Caremark is partnering with Direct Relief USA to offer up to $5 million in free flu shots nationwide to community clinic and health center patients who are uninsured. Direct Relief USA is a non-profit organization that works with 1,100 clinics and health centers in all 50 states, providing them with free medications and supplies for their low-income and uninsured patients.

Cornerstone Medical Clinic will identify uninsured individuals from its existing patient population in order to provide them with a free flu shot voucher. The vouchers are redeemable at any CVS/pharmacy or MinuteClinic located nationwide.

"We are grateful for the generous donation from CVS Caremark," says Jesse Vasquez, Director of Community Services at Cornerstone Medical Clinic. "Many of our patients who are in a tough financial situation will now have access to a flu shot, and will be able to better ensure they stay healthy this flu season."

"The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending that everyone receive a flu shot this year, and we want to make sure that as many people as possible are able to obtain a flu shot, including patients for whom cost may be a barrier," said Larry Merlo, President and COO, CVS Caremark. "We are pleased to partner with Cornerstone Medical Clinic and Direct Relief USA to help accomplish that goal."

"Thanks to Cornerstone Medical Clinic and the more than 340 clinics and health centers participating in this program nationwide, thousands of uninsured individuals will now have access to flu protection," said Thomas Tighe, President and CEO of Direct Relief." Cornerstone Medical Clinic and CVS Caremark are to be commended for helping to address an annual public health risk."

CVS pharmacy has more than 7,000 locations and MinuteClinic has more than 500 locations inside select CVS/pharmacy stores. MinuteClinic nurse practitioners are available to provide vaccinations 7 days a week during regular business hours with no appointment required.

$205,000 Health System Partners Grant

$205,000 Health System Partners Grant

Cornerstone is making plans to increase the hours of operation and number of patients served through its Free Medical Clinic. This expansion is made possible through a $205,000 grant from Baylor Health Care System, HCA North Texas Division, Methodist Health System, and Texas Health Resources. Mike Doyle, President/CEO of Cornerstone says, "This grant will allow us to find medical homes for many more people living in Tarrant County who are not covered by insurance. This is a real Blessing to the people we serve. We are ecstatic over the opportunity given us by the participating Health System Partners. Our entire community will benefit."
A Letter from Our CEO

A Letter from Our CEO

From the August 2010 Newsletter Article

What a Blessing it is to serve the Lord with each of you. Thank you for your support that allows us to share with you stories like this: Jerry Cabluck, Director of our WelcomeBack Program, came in today and shared with me that at the Parole Office this morning a volunteer from a local church brought flowers for the ladies coming back to Tarrant County from prison. All the ladies were overwhelmed with the expression of Christ's Love coming from Christ's people. They were given lunch and an invitation to come to Cornerstone to get the help they need to re-enter the free world.

Or the lady I met in the computer lab while I was giving a tour to a new foundation. She had just graduated from the Cornerstone Christian Women's Job Corps (CCWJC). CCWJC is headed by Janet Powers and teaches women job-readiness skills. Each lady has a mentor to help them work their way back to independence. This lady was smiling from ear-to-ear as I shared with the foundation what CCWJC was all about. She spoke up and shared that she had just graduated and was starting a new job in two weeks and that she was wearing a dress that she got in The Store. She was ready to start a new life of Hope and success.

What an opportunity we have to see things like this every day. You should feel good about your part of these successes because without your faithfulness financially, through volunteering, and prayer we could not bring you these wonderful examples of our work together.

Along those lines, I want to encourage you to read about our upcoming Golf Tournament on October 4th. The format has changed to a scramble, yet we are still encouraging teams to raise money the way they did in the Marathon Format. There will be two prize pools. One for the team that raises the most money and one for the scramble team with the lowest scores. First Prize for the team that raises the most money is a suite for 20 at a 2011 Rangers Game. First Prize for the scramble is 4 round-trip tickets anywhere Southwest Airlines flies.

We are going to make this the best event of the year but we need 18 teams of 4 to commit to raising $2,500 minimum (no maximum) to support God's work here at Cornerstone. Please read the rest of the newsletter for more details or call Roddy Youree or Denice Crawford at 817.632.6000 for more information on how to enter and WIN.

Thanks again for the privilege of Serving Him Together,

Mike Doyle

We are very excited to announce that we are moving closer to building our first three homes for low-income families. Our house plans have been completed and approved. We have signed a commitment letter with the City of Fort Worth and hope to begin building by October 1, 2010. Please continue to pray that God would prepare the way. WelcomeBack program appears to be for mid-year projections. We have seen 1363 men and women returning from prison, distributing more than 2400 items of clothing and helping over 439 additional family members. Many of those returning have their high school diploma or GED, but we are helping over 45 men and women with classes to prepare for the GED test. Have you ever seen a woman that was just released from prison cry upon receiving flowers at parole? Volunteer Ray Coleman has a unique ministry- he gives out flowers to the returning women. Something we men, including me, seldom think about. Humbling to say the least!!

Kristen Horton
Director of Volunteers

You said it! When asked, "What is the best part about volunteering at Cornerstone?" you told us:
  • "Knowing you are helping a program that does so much good for others."
  • "You meet some really great people."
  • "It feels like you are part of a family, God's family!"
  • "Hearing from those that I have helped that I have made an impact."
  • "The smiles and friendly people that work there are real. Everyone believes in what they do."
  • "I get an absolutely wonderful sense of fulfillment when a woman changes her spiritual or professional life and I know I had a tiny part in it."
  • "Doing something that pleases the Lord."
  • "Treasure in heaven!"

In the first half of 2010, over 300 volunteers donated nearly 5,000 hours of service to people in need through Cornerstone Assistance Network. We hope you will answer the call to join them this Fall. Please contact Kristen at 817.632.6022 or khorton@canetwork.org for more information about current volunteer opportunities.

...until CAN's 16th annual Golf Tournament!

Over the past fifteen years, this unique event has raised funds to help Cornerstone serve those in need with food, clothing, furniture, appliances, medical services, ESL, GED, adult education, and job skill/readiness training, providing a pathway back to independent living. Last year, golfers raised a total of $41,600 for our ministry!

There are several ways you can take part in blessing those in need through this year's tournament. We are still looking for sponsors as well as Team Leaders who will field a team of three other golfers. Not a golfer? Help the committee come up with and put together gift bags and door prizes.

For information on what the tournament will look like this year as well as what the fantastic prizes will be, click here. If you have any questions or would like to be involved in the tournament, please contact Denice at dcrawford@canetwork.org or 817.632.6000 ext. 110.
